Navigating mental health on social media

Let’s face it: We’re in the digital era, and social media has become an integral part of our lives, offering us a space for connection, self-expression, and information exchange. However, as social media’s influence grows, so too does the prevalence of mental health challenges.

We’ve seen support groups, forums, and online communities offer a safe space for individuals to share their stories, seek guidance or rescue, and find solace in knowing that they are not alone. However, according to Agnes Zsila and Mark Eric S. Reyes, social media

can also lead to tremendous stress, pressure to compare oneself to others, and increased sadness and isolation.

Breaking the façade of perfection

Amidst the shared highlights, a growing movement online emphasizes authenticity and vulnerability. Influencers and content creators use their platforms to shed light on mental health struggles, promoting understanding and empathy. By sharing personal stories, they break down the façade of perfection, encouraging others to embrace their imperfections and seek support when needed.

Online platforms allow bullies and keyboard warriors to rise and call anyone out on anything. Celebrities, religious leaders, and political figures alike have experienced the wrath of social media and public opinion.

While the space can provide a sense of community and support, it is crucial to recognise its limitations. Social media should not replace professional mental health assistance. It can be a supplementary resource that can bridge the accessibility gap by providing users with contact details of support groups such as SADAG.

Are you struggling to navigate your mental health while consuming online content? If you require a safe space and would like to speak to someone, don’t hesitate to contact the Child Protection Hotline for free counseling.
