In this podcast, we provide some solid advice for young entrepreneurs. The pitfalls, principles and what to consider before you take on your first business venture.

A Kidpreneur is a child who runs their own official or unofficial business to help gain some cash for whatever reasons they may need it. It takes some serious motivation and discipline to start a business no matter your age. It is an endeavour worthy of pursuing because of its benefits that go beyond financial gain. You will learn important skills like time management, prioritisation, social skills, financial management and how to plan your life, to name a few.

Starting out as an entrepreneur

You need to do some research about the business you would like to start by finding out what your community needs and how much it would cost you to get resources for your business. Choose to offer a service you would enjoy providing and be sure that it fits into your schedule. Some good business ideas include washing cars over the weekend; selling treats at school functions if your school allows it or at other local functions if your parents are willing to invest in you starting your business; creating accessories and selling them or painting and selling your art pieces or performing at local events.

It is important that you take full advantage of all the support you have available. Get guidance from your parents on how to schedule your time so that you can honour your school-related responsibilities and balance that with your business. You can ask family or friends to take over the business during times when you need to focus your attention on studying for tests and exams.  You could also ask your maths or business subject teachers for advice. There is always someone willing to contribute to your venture. Just remember to remain committed to your duties, respect all those you encounter as you figure things out and enjoy your unique path as you discover what you are good at.

Finally, your school work should always take first priority over the business – do your homework, and put the business on hold when you know you need to prep for tests or exams. Remember to take good care of yourself by eating healthy, taking breaks and resting when you need to so that you can give your best at school and your business.
