Strength Under a Lid
Titus 3:2 tells us we're to be 'courteous'. Sound soggy? The Greek word for 'courteous' doesn't mean polite. It's used to mean a beast that was wild, but that's now under control. Want a good example? Moses was described as humble, or meek (Numbers 12:3) but could still deliver an almighty smackdown to a rowdy group of Israelites when they needed it. But when the situation didn't call for anger, he didn't pretend he needed to make a noise.
Titus 3 is about how we live as citizens of God's Kingdom, in a world that isn't always up for reciprocating the love that God calls us to show. So when it tells us to be courteous, it's asking for more than holding the door open. It's asking for Moses-like (and hey... Jesus-like) consideration, of what the most loving thing to do is for each situation. It's asking for us to squash our own human-anger when we need to, and let through a God-inspired 'what do you think you're doing' when it's appropriate. It means: know when to hold back, and when not to.
Be aware of the frailty of other human beings. Give some thought to how you can hold back on unnecessary anger that'll only inflame a situation. As followers of Jesus, aiming to live like He did, our job is to fight strong for what's right, while soft-heartedly remembering that no one (including yourself) has it all together yet.
