Word Legacy

Job 4:3 NLT

Job suffered a whole lot, and when he was about to give up, his friend Eliphaz reminded Job of how he'd encouraged people in the past, in situations similar to the one he happened to be facing. Good words have the power to comfort, build up and create lasting relationships. But negative ones are equally powerful; untamed, our words can destroy people's confidence and create wounds (throwback to yesterday's reading). James 3:8 (NIV) says: 'No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison'.

So, let's put a focus on what we say. We need to put thought into everything that comes out of our mouths. When you step away from reading this today, is what you're going to say to others encouraging, helpful, or kind? This goes beyond the here-and-now; as someone goes on with their day, your encouragement will help them through. Remember the last time someone gave you some real, strong encouragement? Yeah, like that. Up for getting yourself into the habit of building people up? You might find a community of encouragers growing around you, who can then help you when you feel rubbish, too.

An aside to bear in mind: This isn't flattery. We don't want to be nice to people just so they'll do things for us. What we should want to do is encourage people. Our words should, more than anything, remind them of who God says they are. Let's use our words to build up, not tear down.
