Jesus vs Superman
In 2 Corinthians 12:7 Paul talks about how he'd been given a 'thorn in the flesh' that he begged God to take away. But 'Each time [God] said, "My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness"'. So now [Paul was] glad to boast about [his] weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through [him] (2 Cor. 12:19 NLT). God was teaching Paul the power of depending on Him, rather than on himself... do we need this lesson? Big time.
Our nature without God loves to put on a Superman cape and fly around, forcing its strength over everything. Jesus completely rejected this - when He came to earth He showed His strength in the weakest things, right up until He let an oppressive government take away His rights, His dignity, and His life on the cross. You can't get weaker than that. But in that moment He showed the power of God in weakness: 'Into your hands,' He breathed to God, 'I commit my spirit' (Luke 23:46 NIV). Jesus didn't set Himself up as a Superman. Jesus showed a different way. His way wasn't all army-crushing muscles, with His logo emblazoned on a cape. He set the example of giving everything to God, utterly depending on Him and His strength.
When we depend on God for every emotional, physical, and spiritual thing and surrender our thoughts, feelings, and desires to Him, there's no limit (no, not even the most heart-breaking, weakening situation) to what He can do through us.
