But, but, but!
Let's be upfront here. We're not perfect, nor will we ever be perfect, but in spite of our flaws, we can still chase after God's heart, just like David. The key to being that sort of person lies in acknowledging our mistakes. Let's learn from David again, shall we? In 2 Samuel David saw Bathsheba and, well, fancied her quite a bit. Skip ahead a bit and Bathsheba becomes pregnant. In an attempt to cover up the pregnancy, David had her husband sent to the front lines so he'd be killed. After Bathsheba's husband died, David made her one of his wives '...But the LORD was displeased with what David had done' (2 Samuel 11:27 NLT). A prophet confronted David about his affair and act of murder. David acknowledged his failures: '...I have sinned against the LORD...' (2 Samuel 12:13 NLT).
There were consequences to David's actions, but the prophet assured him that God had forgiven him (vv. 13-14). When the prophet confronted David, David didn't become defensive, but he admitted his faults. More often than not we reply with 'but I... but what I meant was...' and a thousand other interjections. If we want to be people who are chasing after God's heart, we have to acknowledge our mistakes and learn from them just like David did.
