Our helper
Jesus said, 'The Helper will teach you everything and will cause you to remember all that I told you. This Helper is the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in my name' (NCV). So the Holy Spirit has these two functions: 1) He teaches us how to walk with God. As redeemed children of God, we constantly need to be taught how to walk with Him. We have to learn how to walk as Christians, and falling down many times is just part of growing up. The Bible says, 'though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again' (Proverbs 24:16 NIV). God doesn't give up on us when we fall. He helps us to get back on our feet and try again. 2) He reminds us of everything God has told us. The Holy Spirit can remind us of the importance of reading God's Word each day. The psalmist wrote, 'How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word' (Psalm 119:9 NIV). The Spirit can also reveal things to us when we are reading the Bible. He can help us to understand what things mean and what God's trying to say to us. Sometimes we can forget how much of a privilege it is to have the Spirit inside of us, helping us, guiding us, comforting us, and teaching us. Jesus said to the disciples: 'It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you' (John 16:7 NIV). Jesus could only be in one place at a time, but the Spirit can be with us all, all the time. So let's thank God for the gift of the Spirit.
