Who are you looking at?

John 21:21 NLT

The Bible says, 'Peter turned around and saw behind them the disciple Jesus loved - the one who had leaned over to Jesus during supper and asked, "Lord, who will betray you?" Peter asked Jesus, "What about him, Lord?" Jesus replied, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me." So the rumour spread among the community of believers that this disciple wouldn't die. But that isn't what Jesus said at all. He only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?"' (vv.20-23 NLT). When Peter asked Jesus, 'What about him, Lord?' he was referring to the apostle John, who had an especially close relationship with Jesus. And Jesus replied, 'If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.' (v.22 NIV). When we look at other people, we can run into some problems. Firstly, we end up comparing ourselves. We need to concentrate on our own journey. God's got a different plan for all of us, so our journey isn't going to look like the journeys of those around us. Secondly, people will disappoint us, just as we will disappoint them. But Jesus will never disappoint us if we keep our eyes on Him and follow Him. Even with the best of intentions, people will give us bad advice, and we will give them bad advice. But Jesus won't. He doesn't just know the way, He is the way (take a look at John 14:6). Jesus says, 'He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life' (John 8:12 NKJV). So let's be people whose eyes are fixed on Jesus, and not the others around us.
