Livin' on a Prayer 4: Urgent
What would you miss most from your morning routine? What's the one thing you absolutely have to do before your head is screwed on? For lots of people it's a shower, or coffee, breakfast, or a makeup routine. Now think: what would it take to make you abandon that? To go rushing out of the house without even getting changed, dressing gown flapping in the wind. It would probably take something serious, even beyond some favourite celebrity showing up in the town square. Maybe even a serious illness in the family. Bible scholar Tom Wright asks that question when he's talking on Matthew 8:14-22.
The idea is that the call of Christ is more urgent, more impossibly immediate, than even your most precious priorities. How did this bear out in the lives of His first followers? It seems like they took His words in Matthew pretty seriously. And, the way they did that was first through prayer. Colossians 4:2 (NIV) says, 'Devote yourselves to prayer', and in Acts 1:14 (ESV) we find that 'All ... with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer'. The most urgent thing in the lives of the early Church was prayer. So much so that, when there was a decision to be made, they would travel for days in order to pray together. How do you respond to Jesus' call to make Him first, in your daily routine? Does it frame your days, like it did for them?
