A Dish Best Served Gentle
Gentleness comes with a pretty hefty promise: 'Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth' (Matthew 5:5 NASB). We'll take some, then. But what actually is gentleness? We'll cut right to the chase: it's all about power under control. Not the stereotype of quietly avoiding making any noise, but rather a restraint that makes room for God to work. Practical example: when someone's really wound you up and done something you could really get them back for, how easy is it to hold back on any power you have to humiliate them/get revenge? Possibly not very. But that's where the power of gentleness comes in. To restrain yourself from bringing more pain to a situation. And instead to act in favour of allowing God to have His way.
In Titus 3:2 (NIV) we learn that following God involves being 'gentle toward everyone'. That's a great life model, but... you're not alone if you still find sharpness, gossip, and arguing in your repertoire, with a need to make way for patience, selflessness, and peace. It's a difficult challenge, yes. But that's where the Bible comes in handy - let's learn from Jesus, the fearless, almighty, and gentle King. How much power did He have? Yeah, quite a lot. He didn't refuse to use His power; He chose to exercise it in gentleness. The cross is the strongest display of love that we'll ever see, but Jesus didn't fight His way there. He allowed God to use Him. How much in-your-own-power type thinking do we need to hand over to God, to let Him use us?
