Practise humility

Mark 9:34 CEV

Jesus asked His disciples, '"What were you arguing about along the way?" They had been arguing about which one of them was the greatest, and so they did not answer... he said, "If you want the place of honour, you must... serve others!"' (vv. 33-35 CEV). If, after living with Jesus day and night for three years, His own disciples struggled with the concept of humility, it's not really surprising that we struggle with humility too.

Jesus showed the disciples what it means to be humble by giving them a practical example. 'During the meal Jesus got up, removed his outer garment, and wrapped a towel around his waist. He put some water into a large bowl. Then he began washing his disciples' feet and drying them with the towel he was wearing' (John 13:3-5 CEV). Jesus then went on to say: 'If your Lord and teacher has washed your feet, you should do the same for each other. I have set the example, and you should do for each other exactly what I have done for you' (vv. 14-15 CEV).

But serving others the way Jesus asks us to serve can be really tough. We can often feel like we're in competition with others, trying to prove our worth, just like the disciples were arguing about who was the greatest. People annoy us, hurt us or put us down and the last thing we feel like doing is being humble and serving them, especially if they aren't doing the same for us.

But serving humbly is serving without expecting something in return. It's more than just an action we're called to do. Author and preacher, Chuck Swindoll writes: 'for the followers of Christ... humility isn't a religious concept, it's a way of life.' So let's make sure humility is our way of life.
