When God calls us to do something, we can keep putting it off. It might seem harmless to leave it for a day or two, but that can turn into weeks, months, or even years. In the book of James we are reminded that we 'do not know what will happen tomorrow' (James 4:14 NCV). We don't know when Jesus is coming again. How would we feel if He returned and we still hadn't done what He'd asked us to do? James goes on to say: 'Anyone who knows the right thing to do, but does not do it, is sinning' (v.17 NCV). This may seem harsh, but if we know what God's called us to do and we keep putting it off, then we are sinning against Him. So why do we end up procrastinating in the first place? Firstly, we can be afraid. Fear can stop us from moving forward and stepping out of our comfort zones into God's calling. Secondly, we can feel too busy to start something new. But if God's calling us to do it, it should be a priority. We might just need to make some adjustments to our lifestyles so that we can get started. The Bible says: 'Teach us how short our lives really are so that we may be wise.' When we realise that we may not have tomorrow, we can be wise in prioritising. Finally, we can feel like we are not good enough to do what God's calling us to do. We put it off until we think we are good enough and equipped enough to carry it out. But often God calls us to do things that we don't feel equipped to do so that we have to rely on His strength, and bring Him glory in the process.
