Use your gifts

Psalm 33:3 NLT

To 'play skilfully' means to do it well and strive for excellence when it comes to our God-given talents. It doesn't mean we have to be perfect, and never make mistakes, but it means we need to be committed to nurturing the talents God's given us. We need to practise using our gifts and skills. We need to be eager to improve and grow in them. Firstly, we need to recognise what our gifts are. We can do that by seeing what we're good at and what we're passionate about. We can ask God to show us what skills He's given us. Once we know, we need to make sure we're committed to advancing them. But we also need to keep our attitude positive and humble. We need to be willing to serve using that gift, rather than using it to make ourselves look good. Romans 12:6-8 sums it up well: 'If you preach, just preach God's Message, nothing else; if you help, just help, don't take over; if you teach, stick to your teaching; if you give encouraging guidance, be careful that you don't get bossy; if you're put in charge, don't manipulate; if you're called to give aid to people in distress, keep your eyes open and be quick to respond; if you work with the disadvantaged, don't let yourself get irritated with them or depressed by them. Keep a smile on your face' (MSG). This gives us some great advice to know how to use our gifts well. We need to be ready and willing to use our gifts, we need to be humble in our use of them, and we need to do so with God's glory as our motive. Let's be committed to doing the best we can for God, with what He's given us.
