Dead or Alive

Philippians 1:21 MSG

Picture the worst possible prison you can imagine. Smelly, damp, cold, and dark? Well, multiply that by an exaggerated number and you may or may not get to the 'inner prison', where Paul and Silas were. Prisoners were flogged, and their ankles and wrists placed in strong irons to keep them from moving. No change of clothes ever, no matter how dirty they were. No water and no bathroom. The smell alone could make a person want to die. To put it lightly, prisoners welcomed death.

In the midst of these inhumane conditions, Paul and Silas sang praises to God: 'Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening' (Acts 16:25 NLT). Those other prisoners probably thought Paul and Silas were insane when they first started singing, but soon, they'd get curious. Seriously, read the story. The prison doors flew open as they lifted up a song to God.

How could someone have joy in the midst of such pain? Paul wrote, 'Everything happening to me in this jail only serves to make Christ more accurately known, regardless of whether I live or die. They didn't shut me up; they gave me a pulpit! Alive, I'm Christ's messenger; dead, I'm his bounty. Life versus even more life! I can't lose' (Philippians 1:19-21 MSG).

Paul found his strength in God. That's faith. Paul knew that, no matter what happened, God wins in the end. So, forgetting himself and his circumstances, he put his faith in Him.
