Hollywood Ending?
In Genesis 50, Jacob has died and now Joseph's brothers are worried that he's been waiting. Watching. Sharpening the old knife collection. Their dad is dead, so surely now is the moment where Joseph would finally take his revenge. That's how it'd play out in Hollywood. The wronged party waits and waits, and eventually gets the payback that they deserve in a really satisfying manner. Only that's not how it plays out when God is involved. When is the big payback? When do they get what's coming?
They don't. Joseph isn't just doing it to make a point, or to teach a lesson. Joseph has been changed. How can we do that? We can determine to forgive, we can try hard to love, but ultimately it can only come from God. Things like this that seem impossible (especially when we think of them as should-do tasks or rules) can become natural. But only from living in a place of closeness with God, living 'in the Spirit'.
As we spend our days aware of His presence, He changes our hearts. Just take a look at Galatians 5:18. We can really be people who love and forgive like that, naturally, and from the heart, because we have a God who's specialised in exactly that, from the dawn of time.
