Self Help Is No Help
New Year's resolutions, Lent, diets - in our culture they're all about trying to make a newer, better, shinier, and more attractive you. Most of the time it doesn't last and you'd be lucky to have your new regime last more than two weeks before falling back into the same old routine. We don't change, but we're desperate to. There's a crazy amount of self-help books out there; the problem with self-help books is that they tell us what to do but can't give us the power to do it. We are told things like: 'Get rid of all your bad habits. Be positive; don't be negative.' Yeah, great! But how? Where do we get the power to change?
The word for 'power' pops up a lot in the New Testament. It's used to describe the most powerful event that ever happened - the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. And Paul writes: 'The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you...' (Romans 8:11 NLT) You've got literally the most powerful person ever on your side and living in you. Which is great because the only thing all this 'trying to make yourself better' shows us is that we really need some help. So stop trying to do it all by yourself, okay? (God's really good, and wants to get involved).
