You can change

Ephesians 4:22-23 NKJV

When we talk about renewing our minds, we often look at how we think about ourselves. But it also applies to how we think about others and our circumstances. When we're thinking things like 'I thought they'd change', 'no one appreciates me' or 'it's always me who makes the effort in the friendship', we're not going to get very far. In fact, we'll probably just end up feeling bitter, resentful and miserable.

When we don't change how we think about things, we don't change how we react to circumstances. We can't expect different results if we don't change anything. An experienced counsellor writes: 'Are you waiting for something to change, instead of doing something different? Stop pushing the same button, and ask God for clarity to see the situation honestly and to act with wisdom and responsibility.'

Sometimes we can feel trapped by our situations but we don't have to stay stuck or keep going round in circles. We may not always be able to change the circumstances, and we shouldn't be trying to change other people in order to make our situations better, but what we can change is how we're thinking about things. The Bible tells us that we should be thinking about 'whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable' (Philippians 4:8 NIV).

Paul says, 'Put off... your former conduct ... and be renewed in the spirit of your mind.' When we ask God to help us renew our minds, we don't react with bitterness, resentment or disappointment anymore. Instead we can respond with love, compassion and kindness. We can begin to react like Christ.
