How often do we pray big prayers? Elijah asked Elisha, '"Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit," Elisha replied' (2 Kings 2:9 NIV). Elisha wasn't timid, and Elijah wasn't offended by the request. Elisha got his double portion and ended up performing twice as many miracles as Elijah. In the New Testament, we see people bringing huge requests to Jesus. One man said: 'Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech' (Mark 9:17 NIV). He brought his son to Jesus to ask Him to heal him. But then he said: 'If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us' (v.22 NIV). The words 'if you can' suggest He didn't fully believe that Jesus could do everything. This man ended up saying: 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!' (v.24 NIV). We need to ask God to help us overcome our unbelief when we're asking for big things too. God doesn't say that our prayer requests have to be reasonable and practical. He wants us to think big. He wants us to ask for miracles. He wants us to realise that with Him nothing is impossible (have a read of Matthew 19:26). We need to stop limiting God. He can do 'immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.' Whatever our requests are, whether they're humanly possible or not, we should persistently take them to God, believing that He will answer us. We need to start praying those big prayers we've been afraid to pray. God still does miracles today, so let's start believing for them.
