Priorities

Philippians 3:8-9 MSG

When we lose something that was important to us, something like a relationship, our financial security, or our reputation, we realise how much weight we gave that thing in our lives. We discover how much we valued that thing, and whether we had placed it above God. We all know that God should be our priority, but in reality it can be very challenging to avoid finding our joy and value in worldly things. When Job lost everything he had, God was still enough for Him. He didn't stop trusting that God was good and loving, even with all the disasters taking place around him. He lost his children, his animals, his servants, and his health - the things that made him a wealthy and respected man in society. But still he said: 'The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised' (Job 1:21 NIV). He discovered that we can be stripped of temporary things, but not the eternal things; we can be stripped of our wealth, friends, and fame, but not of our character and our faith in God - those things can survive no matter what's going on. The question is, when we lose everything, is God still enough? Can we remain joyful and faithful, even when disaster seems to be all around us? The Bible says: 'Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness' (Matthew 6:33 NIV). If we are struggling to put God first, let's pray this prayer: 'Lord, here are my grudges and unforgiveness, my need to impress, my time, talent and treasure, anything I'm wrapped up in that prevents me being completely Yours.' Let's surrender all that we are, and all that we have, and let God be the first in our lives.
