Be honest
The Bible tells us that we need to be honest. It says: 'Don't lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. Put on your new nature' (vv. 9-10 NLT). Here we are told that honesty should be part of our 'new nature', which suggests it doesn't come all that naturally to us. We have to make a choice to be honest. And there are three ways we need to be honest. Firstly, we need to be honest with other people. We shouldn't be lying, exaggerating, or spreading gossip. Our conversations with others should be filled with truth, love, and encouragement. The Bible says: 'Put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbour, for we are all members of one body' (Ephesians 4:25 NIVUK). Secondly, we need to be honest with ourselves. Sometimes we can be tempted to pretend that everything is fine. We convince ourselves that the habit we have is not that big a deal, and that our lifestyles are godly. But it's only when we get honest with ourselves, and recognise that there's a problem, that change can happen. In Psalm 51, we see David becoming very aware of his sin. 'For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me' (v.3 NIV). David knew that he needed God to come and change him. Thirdly, we need to be honest with God. God knows all about us, so we can wonder why we need to be honest with Him. He longs for us to bring our sins and mistakes to Him so that He can redeem them. It's only when we are prepared to be honest with God, and allow Him to deal with the mess, that we will see change.
