The temptation to take things into our own hands is an always-strong one. Especially when it comes to things like getting revenge when someone has treated us badly. Even if you're well versed in Christian etiquette, deep down it can be a struggle not to bypass the God-chat and go straight to making efforts to hurt that person.
But here's the thing. God wants to take care of setting things straight. In fact, He says 'Vengeance is mine' (Romans 12:19 NKJV), so we know He doesn't let wrongdoing slip under the radar. And here's the other thing. We're not perfect, either. By judging others, we open ourselves up to being shown up as not-so-pure-after-all: 'in the same way you judge others, you will be judged' (Matthew 7:2 NIV). Perhaps revenge isn't so worth it, after all.
Joseph knows a thing or two about that. We'll be taking a closer look at Him in the coming days, but for now, here's the lowdown: bullied, abandoned, imprisoned. Definitely got the short straw out of the 12 brothers in his family. Did he get his own back when he finally met them again years later as a leader in Egypt? No. He grew in faith with God and bravely saw the good in his situation (see today's verse). The fact that he was willing to give his brothers another chance opened the door for family reconciliation; fully accepting them and their families despite all that happened (Genesis 50:19-21). None of that would have been possible without Joseph's willingness to put his ego aside and make room for reconciliation.
