As we are growing up, learning is a big part of our lives. But it doesn't stop once we have passed our exams, graduated, or made it to the top of our career path. There are always new things to learn. There's always more to discover. God loves teaching us and transforming us, but the lessons He teaches aren't as obvious and structured as our academic education. He often uses the tough situations to teach us new things, both about ourselves and about Him. The problem is that it's easy for us to focus on our immediate circumstances (whether they're good or bad), which can make us lose sight of what God wants us to learn through them. So we need to ask Him to keep our eyes and hearts open to what He is trying to show us, because it's not always going to be a clear lesson. We may not even realise at first that we are being taught anything. When Jesus was teaching the crowds and the disciples, He often spoke in parables which they didn't fully understand, but He said: 'The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.' The Spirit lives within us, and can help us understand the lessons God's trying to teach us. The Spirit can help us understand what we are reading in the Bible too. It's important to read the Bible, but at some point we also have to start asking God to teach us something through what we are reading, otherwise our faith will stay at the shallow end. In fact, in all parts of our lives we need to be teachable. We need to be open to learning new things. And we need to look for the lesson.
