The last verse of the last psalm in the Bible says, 'Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD' (Psalm 150:6 NIV). That means as long as we are alive we are called to worship God. The psalmist said, 'Praise the LORD, all you servants of the LORD who minister by night in the house of the LORD. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the LORD' (Psalm 134:1-2 NIV). The Westminster Confession of Faith says, 'The chief end of man is that he might glorify God.' And there are many ways to do it: 'Whoever offers praise glorifies Me' (Psalm 50:23 NKJV). Worship isn't just singing. It's putting God first in all our decisions. It's spending time thanking God for what He has done in our lives, and the lives of others. It's learning more about His character through theological study. Or spending time marvelling at His creation. Worship creates a climate in which we can experience and enjoy God's presence. David said: 'Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits' (Psalm 103:1-2 NKJV). These benefits include things like forgiveness, healing, deliverance, and protection. When we bless the Lord, He blesses us. But this shouldn't become the reason we decide to worship. God knows when we are just going through the motions or have ulterior motives. True worship comes from a heart that simply wants to glorify God, and put Him above everything else in our lives, including ourselves. Worship is humbling. It's about admitting that we are not God, and showing our gratitude and admiration for how good He is.
