What God wants

Micah 6:8 NIV

The prophet Micah asks: 'With what shall I come before the LORD...Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings...with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of olive oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for...the sin of my soul?' (vv. 6-7 NIV). Sometimes we can feel like we will never be good enough to please God. It can feel like there's a set of impossible, guilt-inducing demands which, no matter how hard we try, we can never meet. It can feel like we will always fall short of God's expectations. But Micah says: 'He has shown you, O mortal, what is good' (v.8 NIV). Because we have been redeemed and filled with God's Spirit, we can: 1) 'Act justly', even when nobody else does. This helps us to have integrity so we can be confident before God. The Bible says: 'If our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him' (1 John 3:21-22). 2) 'Love mercy.' Jesus went through life lifting people up, not walking all over them. When He used the parable of the Good Samaritan to teach people, He showed that it was the man who had mercy who was the true neighbour. Jesus then told the people to 'go and do likewise' (Luke 10:37 NIV), and that's what we should do too. 3) 'Walk humbly with your God.' When God raises us up, our greatest challenge will be to make sure He gets all the glory. Humility doesn't come naturally to us. But, as John the Baptist said, 'He must become greater; I must become less' (John 3:30 NIV). Every good thing we have today is a gift from Him. So, let's 'act justly...love mercy and...walk humbly.'
