Open hearts

Acts 16:14 NLT

Everyone has an emptiness within them that only God can fill, and He wants to use us to fill it. In the Bible we read the story of Lydia becoming a Christian. 'One of them was Lydia from Thyatira, a merchant of expensive purple cloth...As she listened to us, the Lord opened her heart, and she accepted what Paul was saying. She and her household were baptised, and she asked us to be her guests. "If you agree that I am a true believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my home." And she urged us until we agreed' (vv.14-15 NLT). Not only did Lydia respond to the gospel, she opened her home so that others could come and hear it too. Sharing our faith with others is easier when the person we're sharing with has a heart that's ready to hear about Jesus. A lot of people have put up barriers and have preconceptions about God. Maybe they've heard about God before, but felt let down by the church, other Christians, and even God Himself. Maybe they're carrying disappointment and lack of hope for the future. Maybe they're quite happy with their life as it is, even though there's the opportunity for something even better. In Lydia's story it was God who opened her heart. We don't know the things that had closed her heart, but it was God who opened it - not Paul. Sometimes we can think that sharing our faith means we have to do it all. But we shouldn't forget that God's working too. God can open the hearts of the people we're sharing our faith with. So let's share our faith with them when we have an opportunity, and believe that God will do the rest.
