Have you ever prayed and felt nothing at all?
You open your Bible, but the words don’t seem to speak to you. You attend church, sing the songs and listen to the sermon, yet something inside feels disconnected.
And eventually, an uncomfortable question surfaces:
“God, where are You?”
Many Christians struggle to admit they’ve asked this question. After all, aren’t we supposed to feel close to God?
But what happens when we don’t?
“Feeling distant from God isn’t the same as being abandoned by Him. Sometimes faith is trusting His character when you cannot feel His presence.”
When Your Faith Feels Dry
There are seasons when prayer feels natural, worship moves you deeply and Scripture seems to speak directly into your circumstances.
And then there are seasons when everything feels strangely quiet.
You still believe in God. You still want to follow Him. But the warmth and excitement you once experienced seem to have disappeared.
Remember this: Feeling distant from God isn’t the same as being abandoned by Him.
Our emotions change. Our circumstances change. Even our spiritual enthusiasm changes.
But God’s character doesn’t depend on how we feel.
Even David Questioned God’s Presence
In Psalm 13:1, David cries:
“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?” (KJV)
Those aren’t the words of someone experiencing effortless faith.
They’re the honest questions of a man struggling with God’s apparent silence.
Yet something remarkable happens.
By the end of the Psalm, David declares:
“But I have trusted in thy mercy; my heart shall rejoice in thy salvation.” (Psalm 13:5, KJV)
His circumstances hadn’t necessarily changed. But he chose to remember God’s faithfulness.
Sometimes faith isn’t feeling God’s presence. It’s continuing to trust His character when His presence feels distant.
Don’t Mistake Spiritual Dryness for Failure
Perhaps you’re exhausted, overwhelmed or carrying disappointment you haven’t fully processed.
Sometimes emotional fatigue affects our spiritual lives more than we realise.
Don’t assume every difficult spiritual season means you’ve done something wrong.
And don’t feel pressured to manufacture emotions during worship or pretend everything is fine.
God doesn’t need a polished performance.
He invites honesty.
Keep Showing Up, Even When It’s Difficult
Read Scripture, even if it’s only a few verses.
Pray honestly, even if your entire prayer is, “Lord, I don’t know what to say.”
Stay connected to people who encourage your faith. Allow yourself to rest. Speak to someone you trust about what you’re experiencing.
James 4:8 encourages us to draw near to God.
That invitation isn’t reserved for days when we feel spiritually strong.
It’s for the difficult days too.
God Is Still There
Clouds can hide the sun without making it disappear.
In much the same way, our feelings can obscure our awareness of God without changing who He is.
So keep seeking Him. Keep being honest. Keep taking small steps of faith.
You don’t have to feel spiritually inspired every day to have a meaningful relationship with God.
Sometimes faith is simply choosing to believe that God is near, even when your heart struggles to feel it.
