Young people are the pioneers of their own future, but they need to work together with older generations to gain wisdom and advice. Each unique life is filled with firsts and explorations of experiences they’ve never known. Therefore, the older generation must advise, support, and encourage them to pursue the good visions they have for their future.
Voicing your ideas and visions
Youth have their ideas and visions that they want to voice. However, the begging question is whether the older generation is ready to listen to these ideas. Furthermore, will they take things a step further than simply engaging in conversation? The best way to expand on the potential of our country being the great “Rainbow Nation” is to take hands and collaborate. Meaning, intergenerational efforts to build and sustain a good democratic nation. The solutions to our collective problems
Many hands do light work
We need to work together with the youth being humble enough to listen to the sage advice of elders and maintain a respectful stance. Equally, the older generation ought to be willing to listen, engage with, and be willing to support young people’s innovative perceptions. Also, whilst maintaining a respectful stance. None should merely disregard the other. Also using opportunities to learn, connect and be of service within the Nation. It doesn’t help to complain about issues if we aren’t going to be part of the change by physically working together.
“Our mental health challenges are often dismissed by elders. Amplifying our voices regarding these challenges will help bring balance in youth’s lives and eliminate the fear of sharing their issues.” – Sisipho
Offering safe spaces
It’s important that we collectively offer and create safe spaces to have discussions that tackle issues youth face. Especially nowadays, where youth are plagued with mental health challenges, support from the older generations is crucial. The mind is a powerful resource. However, when troubled, it struggles to function to its full potential. Therefore, we need to ensure we form a strong foundation of support for young people so they can boldly share desired aspirations and pursue them well.
Finally, nowadays, there are ample spaces, opportunities and platforms where young people can gain skills to contribute to their communities. The I Am eLearning platform is a good example. You are the change you want to see in your neighbourhood and country, so get equipped!
