Let’s Talk Mental Health

When people hear “mental health,” they often picture therapy sessions or serious conditions. But it’s way bigger than that. Mental health is about how you feel—your energy, mindset, relationships, and how you handle life. Just like we look after our bodies with food, movement, and rest, we also need to check on our mental health. Not just when things fall apart but as a regular part of living well. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being honest with yourself.

Here’s a check-in to help you reflect. Not a diagnosis—just a moment to pause and see where you’re at:

How am I feeling—really?

Can you name your emotions this past week? Were you calm, anxious, bored, stressed, peaceful? Can you spot what triggered certain feelings? Knowing what affects your mood helps you respond better. Ask yourself – Am I managing stress in healthy ways?

We all deal with pressure. But are you escaping or coping? Are you relying on your phone, substances, or sleep to avoid things? Or do you have healthy go-tos—like music, movement, journaling, talking to someone, or just taking a break?

Who do I have around me?

Strong support matters. Do you have a friend, sibling, mentor, or parent you trust? Do you feel safe asking for help when you need it—or do you think you have to go through it alone? How well are you taking care of yourself?

What are you doing just for you? Are you doing things that bring you joy or peace—like creating, exercising, gaming, reading, or even getting enough sleep? Are you giving your body what it needs—water, movement, food that fuels you?

What am I working toward?

Goals don’t have to be big. Are you setting small, achievable steps in any part of your life? And when you hit a goal—do you pause to acknowledge it? Give yourself credit. Are you learning and growing?

Mistakes and challenges aren’t the end. They’re part of growth. Do you reflect on what’s working and what’s not? Are you open to learning new ways to show up for yourself?

You’re not alone

Mental health isn’t a finish line. It’s something we build and protect over time. Some days are better than others—and that’s okay. But if things feel too heavy, don’t wait. You don’t have to figure it out alone. Reach out to someone you trust, or talk to us anytime—free, 24/7 via WhatsApp, SMS, or call: 076 037 6345. You deserve to feel better. You deserve support. Be kind to your mind. Please reach out to the Child Protection Hotline for free counselling.
