In a world saturated with information, opinions, and external influences, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by what we consume. Yet, Matthew 15:17-20 in the NIV says, “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”
The Power of Perspective
The portion of scripture speaks volumes about perspective. What we absorb—be it food, media, or experiences—does not necessarily defile us. Instead, it is our reactions or responses, thoughts, and behaviours that reveal our character and values. This is especially relevant in today’s society, where negativity and divisiveness abound. We must focus on how we choose to respond to the world around us.
The Role of Intentions
Intentions guide our actions. By cultivating positive intentions, we can transform our interactions and contributions to society. For instance, engaging with constructive criticism rather than succumbing to negativity can foster personal and professional growth. When we prioritise kindness, empathy, and understanding, we produce positive outcomes that reflect our true selves.
Self-Reflection
Self-reflection plays a crucial role in this process. Regularly evaluating our thoughts and actions helps us identify patterns that may need adjustment. By asking ourselves questions such as, “How do my words affect others?” or “What values am I conveying through my actions?” we can align our behaviours with our core beliefs, ensuring that what comes out is uplifting and respectful.
Ultimately, it’s not the information we consume that makes us immoral or impure, but how we choose to express ourselves in the world. What comes out of us has the power to uplift, inspire, and connect, and yet it can also have the opposite effect. Let’s be wise about what we allow to rule our hearts.
