Science and the Bible (6)

Genesis 6:14-15 NLT

In the Bible, we can find the original plan for building big ships. In Genesis, God told Noah to build a 1.5 million-cubic-foot ship and fill it with enough people and animals to repopulate the earth after the flood. And the specific dimensions God gave to Noah turned out to be significant. In 1609 in Hoorn, Holland, a ship was built in the same proportions and it revolutionised shipbuilding. According to Lloyd's Register of Shipping (see The World Almanac), by the year 1900 every large ship was built to a similar size as Noah's Ark.

There's even evidence to show that the world was once destroyed by a massive flood. About 85 per cent of the rock surfaces around the world are made up of sedimentary rock, which shows that at some time in the past, the world was covered by water. The Bible also talks about meteorology.

Solomon wrote, 'The wind blows to the south, and then turns north. Around and around it goes, blowing in circles' (Ecclesiastes 1:6 NLT). The air around the earth turns in huge circles, anti-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Because of this knowledge, meteorologists are able to predict what the weather's going to be like. (They might get it wrong sometimes, but the majority of times, their predictions are accurate!).

There isn't any book like the Bible. When we believe its core message of salvation through Christ, we have peace and joy now, plus the hope that we'll be with God in heaven for eternity. It doesn't get better than that.
