Words

Proverbs 15:4 MSG

'Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me' Right? Wrong. Words have so much power. They can build up or tear down. They can heal or hurt. The Bible says: 'Kind words heal and help; cutting words wound and maim'. When we use words that tear people down, that criticise them harshly, that spread rumours or damage their reputation, we're not using words in the right way. 'Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps' (Ephesians 4:29 MSG).

Words have the power to shape our entire lives; they can change how we act, what we choose to do and, most importantly, how we think about ourselves. And when others speak negative words over us, we need to replace them with God's truth. God's words are words of encouragement. Words that will build us up, strengthen our faith and help us to keep going.

Any words of condemnation, guilt or negativity don't come from God. Once we realise this, other people's words can't have a hold over us anymore. And this, in turn, helps us to use our words to build others up. If we've been hurt by other people's words, it can be easier said than done to let it go. The hurt we feel is real, there's no question about that.

But let's use that hurt for good. If we've experienced the negative power of words, we're able to value the power of positive words even more. We see 'each word [as] a gift' (Ephesians 4:29 MSG). And we can then share God's life-giving words with those who need to hear them most.
