It's a process
When we become Christians, we discover that a part of us wants to walk 'in newness of life' (Romans 6:4), while another part wants to walk 'after the flesh' (Romans 8:5). Our new heart is still living in our old body. It's a constant battle, and it can be tough at times to make the right decisions. It can even make us feel frustrated and like we are failing at following Jesus. But we are a work in progress. When we gave our lives to Him, He began changing and transforming us so that we become more like Him. This is a process, not an instant fix. By walking through certain situations, reading His Word, and spending time in His presence, we gradually change. The Bible says: 'And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image.' And Paul wrote: 'God began doing a good work in you, and I am sure he will continue it until it is finished when Jesus Christ comes again (Philippians 1:6 NCV). God works in us gradually; He doesn't expect us to be perfect right now. And we don't need to strive to be good enough for His love, acceptance, and our salvation. These are gifts. We don't have to reach a certain standard to receive them. But we do need to be open to God working in our lives, and let Him show us areas we need to make some changes. God alone knows the process it will take for each of us. We travel our own paths at our own pace, but our goal is the same: to become more like Jesus. And getting us there is God's job - so we need to let Him do it. Our job is to keep walking with Him day by day as He does it.
